Behind the Scenes at the Workshop
Meet Van Huynh, our Milliner here at JJ Hat Center. Van was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. His journey into the hat industry began as a part time hobby, collecting hats of all descriptions from his travels. Before long, however, he was encouraged by his wife, Mai, to begin making hats of his own after seeing a DIY article in a Japanese newspaper.
"Simply because I didn't have many resources or enough income to make such a career leap, I ended up teaching myself." says Van. His wife was then attending The Fashion Institute of Technology and would bring him all the millinery books she could carry so that Van could study and buy thrift store hats with the intention of "reverse engineering" them to figure out how they were put together.
Soon after he began selling his own creations locally by word of mouth, and decided to enroll in the millinery program at FIT to continue his education. While he was working his way through the program, he also began working at JJ Hat Center as a salesman. His education was kicked into overdrive simply by being surrounded by hats of all kinds every single day.
While still a salesman, he started doing various repair work at JJ Hat Center before eventually being promoted to his current position of 'Head Milliner'. In this role, he has created styles for customers all over the world, and from all walks of life, including Cam Newton, André 3000, Alicia Keys, Laura Prepon (That 70s Show & Orange Is The New Black), Adam Savage (Mythbusters) and George Clinton, to name but a few. From the classic to the eclectic, Van has the tools and know-how to create the perfect hat for you.
Using a tape measure, measure the widest part of your head (just above the ears and eyebrows) to the nearest 1/8th of an inch.
If you have not purchased a new hat recently, please remeasure your head, as sizes may change depending on hair style, weight loss/gain, and age.
Please also keep in mind that hat sizes vary depending on the manufacturer, so if you are unsure of which size to order, please contact us on email@example.com and we’ll be happy to advise.
If you are in between hat sizes, try this cotton sizing to make adjustments at home.
